Getting older comes with changes to a woman’s reproductive system. Perimenopause is the transitional time of life after the reproductive years and before menopause. It can come with uncomfortable symptoms, but those symptoms can be treated and managed with certain lifestyle adjustments.

When you have a new baby, you have a long list of things to do, and one of the most important is to ensure that your baby has healthcare coverage so that they can get the care they need. In California, Medi-Cal provides coverage for newborns who meet certain eligibility requirements. It’s important for parents to know what to do to get their newborn covered by Med-Cal as soon as they are born.

Why Your Newborn Needs Health Coverage at Birth

Newborns require frequent medical care in their first year of life including early screenings, routine checkups, and vaccinations. These services ensure that your child’s growth and development stay on track. Having health coverage in place helps to ensure that these services are affordable and accessible. It also ensures that any unexpected health care needs are covered.

Who Qualifies for Medi-Cal as a Newborn

Eligibility for Medi-Cal is primarily based on household income, but newborns often qualify under special circumstances. If the mother is enrolled in Medi-Cal at the time of birth, the baby is typically automatically eligible for coverage for at least the first year. Even if the mother is not enrolled, many families still qualify based on income requirements.

What to Do if You Are Already Enrolled in Medi-Cal

If you are already enrolled in Medi-Cal, your newborn is automatically covered from birth until their first birthday. However, you need to notify your local Medi-Cal office of the birth within 30 days of delivery. Often, hospitals provide guidance with this process at the time of birth. Coverage will be retroactive so that all medical expenses for the baby are covered from the time of birth.

If you are enrolled in the Medi-Cal Access Program (MCAP), which provides coverage for uninsured pregnant women, after birth, you’ll need to fill out an Infant Registration Form for the Medi-Cal Access Infant Program

How to Apply for Coverage for Your Newborn if You Are Not Enrolled in Medi-Cal or MCAP

If you are not currently enrolled in Medi-Cal or MCAP, you can still apply for health coverage for your newborn. Your baby may qualify even if you are not eligible.

The first step is to apply as soon as possible, either during pregnancy or right after your baby is born. You can apply online through Covered California, which will automatically determine whether your household qualifies for Medi-Cal or another low-cost coverage program. You can also apply in person at your local county social services office or get help from a hospital enrollment counselor if one is available.

When applying, you’ll need to provide basic information such as identification, proof of income, and household size. Once your baby is born, you may also need to submit the birth certificate.

In many cases, coverage can be retroactive, covering medical expenses from the date of birth.

Medi-Cal Eligibility Requirements for a Newborn

For a newborn in California whose mother is not enrolled in Medi-Cal, eligibility is mainly based on household income. Newborns (age 0–1) can qualify if household income is up to 266% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) based on household size.

For example, for a family of two the monthly income limit is currently about $4,796 per month. For a family of four, it’s about $7,315 per month.

There are generally no asset limits for newborn eligibility, and immigration status rules are more flexible.

What Services Medi-Cal Covers for Newborns

One of the biggest benefits of Medi-Cal is the wide range of services it covers for infants and children. These include:

  • Well-baby visits and regular checkups
  • Immunizations and preventive care
  • Hospital and emergency services
  • Specialist care if needed
  • Vision, dental, and developmental screenings

These services are designed to support your child’s health at every stage, from infancy through early childhood.

What Happens as Your Child Gets Older

Medi-Cal coverage doesn’t stop after the newborn stage. Children can remain eligible for coverage as they grow, but families are typically required to complete annual renewals. During this process, you’ll need to update your income and household information to confirm continued eligibility.

If your financial situation changes, your child may still qualify for other affordable coverage options through Covered California.
