How Mental Health Shows Up in the Body

Sleep, appetite, pain, blood pressure. The mind and the body keep one set of books, and a good checkup asks about both.

The connection is physical, not imagined

Long-running stress, depression and anxiety act on the body through the same systems that handle sleep, digestion, immune response and blood pressure. That is why they so often arrive dressed as something else.

Being told that a symptom is stress can feel like being told it is not real. It is real. It simply has a cause that a prescription for the symptom alone will not reach.

What it tends to look like

  • Sleep that breaks up, or far too much of it
  • Appetite and weight moving in either direction without a clear reason
  • Headaches, jaw tension, stomach trouble and muscle pain that keep coming back
  • Harder-to-control blood pressure or blood sugar in someone already managing a condition
  • Getting sick more often, or taking longer than usual to recover

It runs both ways

A long-term physical condition is a heavy thing to carry. Living with diabetes, chronic pain or a recent diagnosis raises the risk of depression and anxiety, and that in turn makes the condition harder to manage. It is a loop, and the useful thing about a loop is that improving either side helps the other.

This is the practical argument for treating both in one place rather than two.

What to say at your next visit

You do not need the right vocabulary. Saying that you have not slept properly in months, or that nothing feels interesting any more, is enough for a provider to take it from there.

Our centers offer medical care, talk therapy and medication management, so the conversation can carry on in the same place rather than starting again somewhere new. If you or someone you love is in immediate danger, call 911. For mental health crisis support, call or text 988 at any time.

We accept Medi-Cal, Medicare, and most plans

No insurance, or not sure what you have? You are still welcome, and our team helps you apply for Medi-Cal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Anything else? Call us during business hours.

Can stress really cause physical symptoms?

Yes. Stress acts through systems that also govern sleep, digestion, immune response and blood pressure, so it can produce symptoms that are entirely physical and entirely real.

Do I have to choose between seeing a doctor and seeing a counselor?

No. Medical care, talk therapy and medication management run at all six of our centers, and it is normal for the same person to use more than one.

What if I am in crisis right now?

Call or text 988 at any hour for mental health crisis support, or 911 if anyone is in immediate danger. Neither asks about insurance.
