Getting older comes with changes to a woman’s reproductive system. Perimenopause is the transitional time of life after the reproductive years and before menopause. It can come with uncomfortable symptoms, but those symptoms can be treated and managed with certain lifestyle adjustments.

More than one in five adults in the U.S. suffer from a mental illness of some kind. Living with a mental health condition is challenging, but many people are not aware that mental health can also affect physical health, both positively and negatively. Often, this is referred to as the mind-body connection. It’s important to care for both your mind and body so that you can live a long and healthy life.

Why Does Mental Health Affect Physical Health?

The brain is the control center of the body, sending signals to all the body’s systems, affecting everything from heart function to the development of inflammation. Emotions, which originate in the brain, cause the release of neurotransmitters that cause physiological responses. These physiological responses, when caused by a poor mental state, can lead to health issues. In fact, people with mental illnesses have a higher risk of several health conditions and a significantly shorter life span than the general population.

However, this is not entirely due to these physiological responses. People with poor mental health are less likely to take care of themselves physically and are more likely to develop poor health habits like smoking, as well as substance use disorders.

How Does Mental Health Affect Physical Health?

While poor mental health can lead to a variety of health issues, four health categories are the most directly impacted.

Heart

Mental health conditions and symptoms can lead to high blood pressure and high cortisol levels. This can lead to heart failure, stroke, and even cardiac arrest.

Immune System

Mental health disorder symptoms cause the brain to release hormones that decrease lymphocytes in the bloodstream, which impairs your body’s ability to fight infection. This leads to more frequent illnesses.

Gastrointestinal

Stress and other symptoms can lead to gastrointestinal issues such as stomach pain, diarrhea, and constipation.

Fatigue

Dealing with a mental health disorder can be draining, leading to chronic fatigue.

Taking Care of Your Mind and Body

It’s clear that to achieve your maximum health potential, you need to care for both your mind and your body. Several steps and lifestyle habits can help you to do so.

Therapy

First, if you suffer from any kind of mental disorder, it’s important to seek help. Seeing a mental health professional is the first step. They may recommend various types of therapy, as well as medication. Mental health disorders are treatable, so don’t suffer in silence. Taking care of your mind can improve your overall well-being.

Exercise

Regular exercise is one of the most important things you can do for both your mind and your body. Physical activity obviously improves your physical condition, but it also releases endorphins that can improve your mood and relieve stress.

Healthy Eating

Eating a regular, healthy diet boosts energy, and strengthens your immune system. A healthy diet should consist of lean proteins, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains, and not include processed foods and sugar.

Sleep

Sleep refreshes your mind and your body. It’s best to have a regular sleep schedule that gives you seven to nine hours of sleep. If you have trouble getting to sleep, do something relaxing before your bedtime like taking a bath or reading, and avoid alcohol, as it can disrupt the quality of your sleep.

Stress Management

Stress has a host of negative effects on the body. To reduce stress in your life, avoid overscheduling yourself and take regular time outs to relax and unplug for a few minutes. Meditation and yoga are also good stress relievers.

Social Connection

Healthy relationships and social connection have been shown to reduce stress and improve overall health. Leave time in your schedule to connect with family and friends.  Healthy relationships also give you a strong support network when you face challenges.

Self-Love

It’s often easy to get caught up in caring for others, but you need to take time to care for yourself, both physically and mentally. You are allowed to say “no” to others so that you can do what’s best for you.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness means being fully in the present moment, focused only on what you are doing, not what’s happened before or what’s going to happen next. By doing this, you’re not worrying, thus reducing your stress and anxiety. It takes a conscious effort and practice do this, but it can improve your emotional and overall well-being.

In Closing

Mental health can significantly impact your physical health in a variety of ways, so it’s important to seek treatment if you suffer from mental health disorder symptoms. It’s also important to adjust your lifestyle to take care of both your mind and body.
